Every UPS Service, Deeply Discounted

From overnight air to economy ground, pick the right service for each shipment. All rates include tracking, $100 declared value coverage, and full surcharge transparency.

When UPS Is the Better Choice

USPS is great for lightweight packages. But there are clear scenarios where UPS saves you money and delivers a better experience.

Heavy Packages (10+ lbs)

USPS pricing jumps steeply after 10 pounds. A 20 lb package via USPS Priority Mail can cost more than UPS Ground with commercial rates. The crossover point varies by zone, but once you are shipping anything over 15 lbs regularly, UPS Ground almost always wins on price.

B2B / Commercial Addresses

UPS does not charge a residential surcharge for commercial deliveries. That saves $4.50-$6.55 per package compared to residential. If you are shipping to offices, warehouses, or retail stores, UPS is often the cheaper option regardless of weight.

Guaranteed Delivery Dates

USPS gives estimated delivery windows. UPS gives commitments. Ground is day-definite, Air services are time-definite. If a customer needs their package by Thursday and you need that guarantee in writing, UPS is the way to go. Missed guarantees are eligible for refunds.

High-Value & Fragile Items

UPS includes $100 in declared value coverage on every shipment. Their claims process is more straightforward than USPS, and additional coverage is easy to add. For items worth $200+, the combination of better handling, reliable tracking, and simpler claims makes UPS the safer bet.

Know Before You Ship

UPS Surcharges to Watch For

UPS has over a dozen surcharges that can inflate your shipping costs. Here are the ones that hit most shippers. atoship shows every surcharge upfront — no surprise invoices three weeks later.

Residential Surcharge$4.50 - $6.55
Applied to every residential delivery. This is the single biggest cost surprise for UPS shippers. Commercial addresses avoid this entirely. If most of your customers are residential, factor this into your pricing.
Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS)$3.50 - $5.00
Certain ZIP codes in rural or remote areas cost more to deliver to. UPS publishes a list of DAS ZIP codes that changes yearly. Think rural Montana, not downtown Chicago.
Extended Area Surcharge$5.00 - $7.00
Even more remote than DAS zones. Remote Alaska, Hawaii, and very rural mainland addresses. Stacks on top of the residential surcharge if applicable.
Large Package Surcharge$110.00
Triggered when length + girth exceeds 130 inches (but under the 165-inch max). This one stings. Measure your boxes carefully — even one inch over can add $110 to your label.
Additional Handling$15.00 - $32.00
Applies to packages over 50 lbs, over 48 inches on the longest side, or over 30 inches on the second-longest side. Also applies to non-standard packaging like tubes, cylinders, or unboxed items.
Dimensional Weight PricingVaries
UPS charges by whichever is greater: actual weight or dimensional weight. DIM weight = (L x W x H) / 139. A large, lightweight box gets charged as if it were heavier. Pack tight to save money.

atoship shows all surcharges before you buy

No hidden fees, no surprise invoices. When you get a rate quote in atoship, the price includes residential surcharges, DAS fees, fuel adjustments, and any other applicable charges. The price you see is the price you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to common UPS shipping questions.

What's the cheapest UPS shipping option?
UPS SurePost is the cheapest option for lightweight packages under 70 lbs going to residential addresses. UPS handles the main transit and USPS delivers the last mile. For heavier packages, UPS Ground with atoship's commercial rates is usually the most affordable. A 10 lb package via UPS Ground through atoship can be 60-75% cheaper than retail counter rates.
UPS Ground vs USPS Priority Mail — which should I use?
For packages under 10 lbs going to residential addresses, USPS Priority Mail is almost always cheaper. For packages 10-70 lbs, it depends on the zone and dimensions — compare rates in atoship. Over 70 lbs, UPS Ground is your only option since USPS maxes out at 70 lbs. For commercial addresses, UPS Ground often wins because there is no residential surcharge. As a rule of thumb: light and residential = USPS, heavy and commercial = UPS.
Why is my UPS bill higher than the quoted rate?
Most likely dimensional weight pricing or surcharges. UPS charges whichever is greater: actual weight or DIM weight (L x W x H / 139). A 20x20x20 inch box weighing 5 lbs gets charged as 58 lbs. Residential surcharges ($4.50-$6.55), DAS fees, and fuel surcharges also add up. atoship shows all these costs upfront so there are no surprises on your invoice.
What's UPS's residential surcharge and how do I avoid it?
UPS charges $4.50-$6.55 extra for every residential delivery. You cannot avoid it for residential addresses — it is built into UPS's pricing model. The only ways to reduce its impact: ship to commercial addresses when possible, use UPS SurePost (lower residential fee), or consider USPS for lightweight residential packages since USPS does not charge a residential surcharge.
What's the maximum package size and weight for UPS?
UPS accepts packages up to 150 lbs and 165 inches in combined length plus girth (length + 2x width + 2x height). The maximum length for any single side is 108 inches. Packages exceeding 130 inches combined but under 165 inches get hit with a $110 Large Package Surcharge. For anything over 150 lbs, you need UPS Freight (LTL), which is a different service entirely.
Can I schedule a UPS pickup from my home or warehouse?
Yes. You can schedule one-time pickups through atoship or set up a recurring daily pickup with UPS. One-time pickups cost around $6-$8. If you ship 5+ packages per week, a daily pickup subscription is usually worth it — it costs about $14/week regardless of package count. You can also drop off for free at any UPS Store, UPS Access Point, or UPS Customer Center.
How accurate are UPS delivery time guarantees?
UPS Ground is day-definite, meaning they commit to a specific delivery date based on origin and destination. Air services (Next Day, 2nd Day, 3 Day Select) are time-definite with guaranteed delivery by a specific time. If UPS misses the guarantee, you can request a refund through their Service Guarantee (also called GSR). This does not apply during peak season or weather events.
Does atoship charge extra fees on top of UPS rates?
No monthly fees, no subscription, no minimum volumes. You pay per label at our discounted commercial rates. The rate you see at checkout is the rate you pay — we show all surcharges, fuel adjustments, and fees upfront. Create a free account and compare rates before you buy a single label.
