FedEx Ground Economy: SmartPost Replacement Explained

FedEx Ground Economy — what used to be called FedEx SmartPost until the rebrand in 2023 — is FedEx's budget shipping option for lightweight residential packages. Like UPS SurePost, it's a hybrid service where FedEx handles the long-distance transportation and USPS handles the last-mile delivery. The new name reflects the fact that FedEx has been gradually absorbing more SmartPost volume into their own Ground network, delivering an increasing number of packages themselves rather than handing them off to USPS.

What Changed with the Rebrand

The shift from SmartPost to Ground Economy wasn't just cosmetic. FedEx has been systematically routing more packages through their own delivery drivers instead of USPS, particularly in areas where FedEx Ground has dense residential coverage. In major metro areas, you might find that a Ground Economy package never touches the USPS system at all — FedEx delivers it directly. In rural areas, the USPS handoff still happens.

This hybrid delivery model means transit times are less predictable than either pure FedEx Ground or pure USPS. Published transit times are 2 to 7 business days, but actual delivery can range from 2 days (FedEx direct delivery in a metro area) to 10 days (USPS handoff in a rural zone during peak season). On average, expect 4 to 6 days.

Pricing and When It Saves Money

Ground Economy pricing is typically 20 to 35 percent cheaper than regular FedEx Ground for lightweight residential packages. The sweet spot is packages weighing 1 to 10 pounds going to residential addresses. Above 10 pounds, the savings narrow and regular Ground becomes more competitive. For business addresses, there's no advantage — FedEx Ground delivers to businesses efficiently and Ground Economy's cost savings come from the residential last-mile optimization.

The minimum package weight for Ground Economy is 1 pound (packages under 1 pound can use FedEx SmartPost — yes, SmartPost still exists as a separate service for sub-1-pound items in some markets). Maximum weight is 70 pounds, though you'd rarely use Ground Economy for anything above 20 pounds.

Tracking Quirks

Tracking with Ground Economy has the same gap issue as UPS SurePost. When FedEx hands the package to USPS, there's often a 12-to-48-hour tracking blackout before the USPS tracking kicks in. When FedEx delivers directly, tracking is seamless. Since you can't control which delivery path a specific package takes, there's no way to prevent the occasional tracking gap.

Customers who complain about tracking gaps usually just need reassurance that their package is still moving. An automated email that goes out on day 4 or 5 saying "Your package is in the final stage of delivery and should arrive within 1-2 days" can preempt most of these support tickets.

Ground Economy vs. UPS SurePost

Both services serve the same market and use the same general approach. Pricing differences are usually within 5 to 15 percent of each other, depending on your negotiated rates with each carrier. FedEx has the edge in areas where they deliver directly (bypassing USPS entirely), which is increasingly common. UPS SurePost hands off to USPS more consistently, which means more predictable (if slower) transit times.

The practical advice is to compare rates for your specific package profile and let your shipping platform choose the cheapest option per package. atoship compares Ground Economy and SurePost rates in real time alongside standard Ground and USPS options, automatically selecting the cheapest service that meets your delivery promise.
