Mercari Shipping Guide for Resellers

Mercari has become one of the busiest resale platforms in the US, and its built-in shipping labels make it one of the easiest to ship from. But "easy" doesn't mean "optimal" — Mercari's prepaid labels are convenient but not always the cheapest option, and understanding when to use them versus shipping on your own can save you significant money over hundreds of transactions.

Mercari's Built-In Shipping Options

Mercari offers prepaid shipping labels from USPS, UPS, and FedEx at negotiated rates. When you list an item, you can select a prepaid label and the shipping cost is deducted from your earnings, or you can pass the cost to the buyer.

The USPS options cover most resale items well. First-Class Package (up to 1 pound) runs around $5 to $6. Priority Mail covers heavier items at rates starting around $8 to $15 depending on weight. The convenience is that Mercari generates the label for you — no need to weigh the package, look up rates, or visit the post office. You print the label, drop off the package, and the tracking syncs automatically.

For heavier items over 5 pounds, Mercari's UPS and FedEx options become relevant. These start around $12 to $20 and go up with weight. For very heavy items like electronics, furniture, or equipment, these can be reasonable — but compare them against your own UPS or FedEx account rates if you have one.

When to Ship on Your Own

Mercari allows sellers to choose "ship on your own" and enter a tracking number manually. This makes sense when you have access to commercial shipping rates (through a platform like atoship or a carrier account with volume discounts) that beat Mercari's prepaid rates.

For lightweight items under 4 ounces, Mercari's minimum label cost might exceed what you'd pay using USPS First-Class stamps or commercial rates. For items where dimensional weight inflates the Mercari label cost, your own rates with a different box size or carrier might be cheaper. And for local sales where the buyer is within a few zones, your zone-based pricing might undercut Mercari's flat rate structure.

The trade-off is convenience. Mercari's prepaid labels are zero-hassle — the weight and dimensions are estimated, the label is generated, and tracking is automatic. Shipping on your own means weighing the package, comparing rates, buying a label, and entering the tracking number. For casual sellers doing a few transactions a month, the convenience of prepaid labels is worth the small premium. For high-volume resellers doing 50-plus transactions monthly, the savings from optimized shipping add up.

Packaging Tips for Resellers

Resellers often ship a wide variety of items, which means you need a range of packaging supplies. Keep poly mailers in 2-3 sizes for clothing and soft goods. Keep small rigid boxes for electronics, jewelry, and breakable items. Padded envelopes work for books, phone cases, and small flat items.

Reuse packaging when possible — this saves money and is environmentally responsible. Remove or cover any old shipping labels and barcodes. Customers generally don't mind receiving items in reused boxes as long as the box is clean and structurally sound.

Pack items securely. Mercari's buyer protection covers items damaged in transit, but filing a claim and dealing with a disappointed buyer is time you could spend listing more items. An extra minute of careful packing prevents hours of claim processing.

atoship integrates with Mercari to help high-volume resellers compare shipping rates across all carriers, finding cheaper options than Mercari's built-in labels while automatically syncing tracking back to the platform.
